Have there been any changes to your software? I lost my auto-detect on XP when I had a trial version of something once. When I took it off, the function returned.
Other changes might affect it too. When I installed new anti-virus, it loaded ahead of my printer and saw it as a threat when it came up. Try also re installing your cam's software. Finally, always have an alternative method for transferring. Like from the composite source instead of relying only on the firewire or USB.
The USB slot or IEEE 1394 DV interface slot on either your computer or your camcorder is most likely broken. Bring it back to the store and see what they can do.
