Does anyone know the difference between dv and dvd on camcorders?

Answers: DV is digitally recorded video on (normally) 8mm V-DAT tapes, while DVD records directly onto a DVD disk.
I have a dv camera and it's for the little bitty tapes and dvd is the dvd's
DV is the tapes about the size of a matchbox.
DVD is silver discs - some regular size, some small.
There are a few differences. They both do the same thing, they just record on different mediums. DV is a tape often called MiniDV, this is the most common and reliable format out there right now and has the longer capacity than DVD. DVD's are nice however you are limited to normally 30min videos and the dvd's come at a higher price than the mini DV tapes. One advantage the DVD's have over tapes is the ability to stick them in your DVD player and play them after you have recorded them.
Simple:
DV is digital video and DVD is digital video disk. The difference is that the first one records on miniDV tape [60-90min][magnetic] or DVcam tape [60-180min][magnetic] and the second one on mini DVD [60-120min]. My suggestion for you, if you want to buy a camera, is to try to search for a HDD camcoder that records on Hard Disk [...7hours!!!][magnetic] like on the computer :) So, you don't need to wait all that time to capture to computer what you filmed. You just transfer it like the photos from a camera.
In addition to what has already been said - DV stands for digital video and is a high quality recording using minimal compression and has a data rate of 25 Mb per second.

DVD is digital video disk and, while it too contains digital video, it uses MPEG compression to get the data rate down into the 4 - 8 Mb per second range.

Bottom line - DV is tape based and has a higher quality image than the disk based DVD. Personally, I prefer to record on DV tape, capture in my computer and then burn to DVD for convenient viewing. This way you always have a high quality archive
The dv cam works with digital tapes of different types and the DVD cam works recording on digital versatile disc (DVD)
