Uploading Video from a MiniDV Camcorder or a DVD?

Question: So I've bought a new MiniDV camcorder to watch all of our home tapes and I want to upload video from it to my computer. I bought a firewire cable and it seems like the computer recognizes the camera after I have everything connected and turned on, and I have video capturing and editing software already installed. When I click on capture it tries to work for a minute but then pops up saying to check the connection and that it is all turned on, but I know that everything is in its right place. Everything is new so I'd be really surprised if it was broken already.
Also, I just converted my home movie tapes to DVD via a DVD recorder. The DVDs will play just fine in my computer, but how can I upload the video from them and edit my movies? Is there some special format I'm supposed to record them in and if so can I still playu them in all DVD players?
Answers: It sounds like either you have hardware conflict, software problem or a device control problem there possibly. What software are you using? If you are going to work on video it's worth getting a decent program like Adobe Premiere etc.
To edit your DVDs you will have to rip them down to basic files and get them into an editor. There are a few ways of doing this but I can tell you a good way to cheat. As they're not copy protected just open up the DVD to view the files..and copy them to your hard drive. You will notice you have two folders..audio TS and Video TS etc. The video files will show up as VOB files. You will normally have to re-encode these to mpeg or AVI to edit them..however try just renaming them to .mpeg or .mpg and ignore what windows tells you. VOB files are actually mpeg 2 files anyway. Then take them into an editor and off you go...and export to DVD if your program supports it. That's the quick way....lol..best of luck.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software?
Are you using the software that came with the camera?
Or you may have a format issue. the camera format and the software has to match. Try working on that.
