What is Sony's i.LINK and how can i connect to a PC Using This?
Question: Many sony camcordas have an i.Link connection but searches for details of this have been futile. is it similar to firewire and what hardware is required to connect such a device to Win XP Home using this connection
Answers: iLink is the Sony term for FIREWIRE (or also known as IEEE1394). To connect it to your computer, and presumably do something with the footage afterwards, you need three things.
1) I FIREWIRE cable. iLink ports on camcorders are typically 4-pin connections. FIREWIRE ports on PC's are typically 6-pin connections. Some laptops come equipped with the smaller 4-pin connections as well. Here's a link to the type of cable you will most likely need if going from 4-pin to 6-pin.

2) You will need a FIREWIRE port on your PC. If it is not already installed, you can easily install one yourself into an available PCI Card slot. Here is a link to a FIREWIRE card.

3) Once you get it on your computer, then what? You will need software to edit your video. There are lots of options out there for this. Mac's use iMovie as a very friendly video editing software. PC's can use any number of programs. Here are two examples of software on the market.

Once you have finished editing your video, you will want to somehow get it out of the computer and into a format that can be viewed by others. You have three ways of doing this.
1) Compress the footage into an internet friendly format, such as Quicktime, Windows Media or RealPlayer. The video editing software should be able to do this for you.
2) Burn the video to DVD. This requires a DVD burner and software to convert your finished movie into a DVD file. Again, the editing software should include this feature. Do not use CD's for this, only DVD's will work. This option can sometimes be problematic, as that some consumer DVD players have trouble reading made-at-home DVD's.
3) Export the footage back out to the camera. This is the equivelant of using your camcorder as a VCR. Your computer plays the program and the camcorder captures the digital video through the FIREWIRE port. You then have an edited version on your camcorder tape (either Digital Hi8 or MiniDV, depending on the model Sony camcorder that you bought). This option is nice and the least troublesome, except that you then have to have your camcorder connected to the TV everytime you wish to watch your movie.
Hope this helps,

It is the same as firewire.
If you have a firewire (or IEEE1394) on your computer you will be able to connect your Sony camcorder to it using an appropriate cable.
I have windows XP on my laptop and did not need to load any drivers when linking a Sony camcorder to it.
Windows Media player also recognised the camcorder and was able to record what i had taped.
its just a firewire connection. almost like usb, but faster....better for video teansfer. just make sure you have a firewire port on your computer. If your computer's less than 3 or 4 years old you probably have one. if not you can always add one on.
