MiniDV vs. DVD?

Question: Hi What are the pros and cons of each? I cannot decide which to buy.
Answers: Well there is huge difference in terms of quality between DV and DVD. You might think that DVD is really high quality but imagine, the capacity of DVD is 4.7 Gigabyte which can hold 1hr 30minutes of video. A 17 minute miniDV video size is 4 Gigabyte. Now you can image how much differece is there in quality between the two media.

MiniDVs are used by professional camcorders too which costs more than £4000. You can get near to broadcast quality in MiniDV depending on the camcorder you use. DV records uncompressed videos and DVD compresses the video to fit on 4.7GB disk.

MiniDV camcorders are cheaper than DVD camcorders, quality is better, although they are not as easy as DVD camcorders. Because with DVD camcorder, once the DVD disc is full, you can play it back directly on a DVD player but for DV camcorder you have to connect it to TV to view the video.
The easiest way to decide is to weigh the convenience benefits.
If you want to watch your movies right away, get the DVD camera.

If you like to edit video on a PC, and want to create DVDs from your footage, the miniDV format is the better choice. Keep in mind you will need to buy and learn a software package to create your movies from the DV source footage. Generally, the MPEG conversion is better on a PC than the real-time compression performed on the camera. Also, miniDV is higher resolution than DVD, so in the future you could make better HD-DVD out of the original source, though not full resolution HD.

Most people never get around to editing the videos, and subsequently don't watch their movies very often. Unless, of course, you decide to invest in a miniDV player to connect to your TV. That's why DVD cameras are becoming more popular.
