Problem with Panasonic Camera?
Question: I have a PV-DV953 3CCD Camera from Panasonic. I went to use it yesterday and it would start out fine and then after a few minutes it would get a red tinge to everything. Does anyone know what this is, how it needs to be fixed, and how much to expect to pay to fix it?
Answers: This could possibly be caused by an automatic white balance (AWB) issue.
The PV-DV953 uses an external white balance sensor to adjust the colors to compensate for changes in lighting. It is a small rectangular eye that is located just to the left of the microphone and above the AE/Focus/White Balance controls. If this sensor is obstructed by anything, including your hand, it cannot measure the lighting conditions under which you are shooting and may cause the AWB to drift. If you are shooting inside under artificial lighting and the AWB drifts it may cause the entire picture to move toward red.
You can test this possibility by using the manual white balance feature to see if the symptom disappears.
Of course, the camera could also have an internal hardware failure any number of circuits which could cause color drift. If it does then you are probably looking at $150 to $500 for a repair depending on what has caused it. If the camcorder has gotten water inside, even a few drops of rain, then could possibly even be totalled.
But check for the obvious first.
Good luck!
