How do you get video only from HDMI but audio from composite?
Question: I'm using my laptop as a DVD player connected to my Pioneer VSX-84TXSi receiver. The $1500 receiver has no DVI input for some reason, but it does have an ipod connection, which I find ridiculous.
Anyway, I bought an HDMI to DVI adapter cable and connected my laptop to my receiver with this method. However, because the HDMI cable is connected to the DVI cable on my laptop, there is no sound coming into the HDMI input on the receiver.
What I want is for the video source to be the HDMI cable and the audio source to be the red and white composite cables from my laptop.
I connected the composite cables into the red and white inputs on the DVD in, and the DVI to HDMI into the HDMI 2 input.
If I have it like that I can get video if I select HDMI 2, and audio if I select DVD, but I can't get both.
When I go to setup and then DVD, there is an option to turn on HDMI input, but when I do that I can get video, but the audio shuts off immediately.
How can I get only video from the HDMI, but t
Answers: TVs (and probably receivers) with HDMI ports have at least ONE set of audio inputs associated with an HDMi input, usually HDMI-1, for this particular reason.
Sometimes, instead of using RCA jacks, HDMI audio use a mini PC-like audio input, because mostly PCs have only DVI.
So, first use HDMI-1 as your video port.
Then see (or check your manual) which analog audio set is associated with this port. You may need to enable it using your receiver's menu, or it may be automatic.
If all fails. Connect the HDMI cable directly to your TV and the audio directly to the AVR.
even if you do that and it works , the audio in red white. will only be ananlog and will not be in 5.1 surround. wich is what the reciever is made for. so if your dvd comp. doesnt have a optical or digital audio out then , it might be a good idea to get a cheap dvd player with digital audio out of hdmi out. you can get the first for about 30$ the hdmi dvd player will be an upconversion and cost about 100$
