Home stereo question?
Question: what does sattilite speakers mean and what does it mean when it says 5.1 or 3.1?
Answers: Satellite speakers are part of a sub/sat speaker system. It has nothing to do with whether they're wired or not. The satellite speakers only produce the mid and high frequencies of the spectrum, while allowing the sub woofer to produce the lows. With a good sub/sat system the frequency crossover point from the sub to the satellites is low enough to be omnidirectional, giving the illusion that the entire frequency spectrum is coming from the satellite speakers.
The .1 in both 5.1 and 3.1 speaker systems indicates the sub woofer. A 3.1 speaker system is comprised of left, right, center and sub woofer speakers. A 5.1 speaker system is comprised of left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround and sub woofer speakers. 5.1 does not indicate that the speaker system is Dolby Digital or DTS; only that is has five speakers and a sub woofer.
Mostly, satellite speakers form part of a full home theater system, comprising a DVD player, 2 satellite speakers, a central speaker and 2 side speakers, one left and one right. The satellite speakers are usually placed farthest from the TV and hung hifgh on a wall mount or high stands. They are used to bring out the background sounds of the program, movie etc., usually the low frequency end of the spectrum to add balance to the whole system and can be phased for an SRS wow sound.Regarding the 5.1, this is the Dolby Digital system surround sound that makes it all sound great. It is the latest version as now used in all Hollywood movies.
satilite speakers are speakers that do not require a wire connection
The small Bose speakers are examples of a satellite speaker.
5.1 is referring to the 5 speakers in a surround sound speaker system. You have 3 in the front (left front, center & right front) and 2 in the rear (left rear & right rear). The .1 is refering to the low freq output for your subwoofer.
Thats it in a nutshell with out getting all nerdy.
