What is an Upconverting HD DVD?

Question: I'm trying to decide between two different DVD players. One is a DiVX Compatible Progressive Scan DVD Player , the other is an Upconverting HD DVD DivX Compatible DVD Player . Does anyone know what upconverting means and why I'd want a DVD player that can upconvert?
Answers: Current DVD technology is not in high definition format (although that's all about to change).

If you have a high definition TV, an up-converting HD DVD player will output in 720p or 1080i as opposed to 480p. A progressive scan DVD player outputs in 480p. These numbers corresponds to the number of lines of resolution - the more the better. The 'p' means progressive - each line is drawn every cycle. The 'i' means interlaced - every other line is drawn every cycle.

In summary, if you have a high definition TV and don't want to wait or pay for the new high definition formats (BluRay and HD DVD) then you should get better picture quality with an up-converting DVD player than a progressive scan player.

You'll need an HDMI input on your HD TV and an HDMI cable.
The upconverting player will scale up the signal to 720p or 1080i for a HD display. The upconverting also has the 480p option (same as a regular progressive scan). If you have a HD tv or planning on getting one, go for the upconverting.
