I am looking to spend about $500-700 for a home theater system. But not sure how to start, like receivers etc?
Question: Want to connect a TV,DVD,DVD recorder,VCR, Ipod, Computer. I did some reaerch and found that it's better to buy separate receiver and speakers rather than HTIB.
Answers: Do not need that ammount of money...
With a good Sony, multireceiver home theater is more than enough...

I just receintly bought a bose speaker system, acousta 6, and a yahama reciever, 5850 at best buy. I got employee discount so it ran about 700 bucks. It is amazing, the sound quality is great, and there are many connections for the yahama reciever that I bought.
A very capable system for music as well as movies would be an Onkyo A/V receiver, Energy Take 5.2 speaker system and a 10 or 12 powered sub from Athena, Cerwin-Vega, Klipsch, or BIC.
Virtually all of these can be found at your local consumer electronics store, or by doing a search online.
If you need a DVD player, find one that has all the features that you want (i.e. plays SACDs or DVD-Audio as well as DVD/R/RWs and CD/R/RWs, single player or changer, etc.).
If you cannot find any complete system that you want for the amount you have budgeted, there are a few HTIB's that are worth considering from Yamaha, Denon, and Harman/Kardon
This is an easy one....look online for a Denon all in one home theater with all 5 speakers and a subwoofer for in that price range (not the 3 speaker one that says it sounds like the five speaker one) Denon is a phenomenal quality and its speakers are actually produced by a high end company and stamped with the Denon name. I am not saying that you couldnt somehow find a great system buying them separately...but as a home theater freak for the money...you will NOT be disappointed...and you wont make a mistake ...best home theater combo on the market
At your price range, there are two ways to do this. One is to buy an out of the box system (nowadays many audio companies like JBL, Klipsch, KEF etc. also make these, so your choice is not restricted to the obvious Sony and the like) and be done with it.
If you want to take the route of separate amplifiers, speakers etc., you are unlikely to find a good system in that price range. So the second way is to build your system over time. This means you buy one good item and other not so good and over time upgrade the not so good ones progressively. If you want to take this route, I'd suggest start with a good pair of front speakers and build your system around them.
