Do more expensive HDMI cables send a better signal?
Question: Is there an actual diference in cables when they are digital, such as HDMI? I figure with analog the signal can be 0-1 and everything in between, so the better the materials the better the signal transfer will be. But with digital, the signal can only be on or off, 1 or 0, right? so there is no Fuzzieness , Thus making no diference in the materials the cable is made from, so the $80 Monster HDMI cable is exactly the same as the $20 off-brand one I found on Ebay, Yes? No? Let me know what you think.
Answers: I don't think the first answerer understood the question. You are absolutely right; You either have a digital signal or you don't. There is no in between.
Well, there probably is a noticeable difference between very cheap cables and very good ones, but there is alot of hype in audio/video to get people like you & me to buy way more expensive gear than we really need. I find that the Gold series cables at Radio Shack are excellent, and are reasonably priced too. Remember it's not just the signal, but also shielding from noise and other adjecent signals/interference that good cable will provide. Having said this, I have seen some people get expensive systems and then use cheap, thin speaker wire. That's a big mistake. Hope this helps.
PS: Another thing to keep in mind is that the average persons system is probably not good enough (has other weak links) to notice the difference in really high end cable.
HDMI has become a recent standard for hi def, but it only means you can send or recieve audio, video and data on a HDMI cable. It is not recommended because the connectors have not be standardized, and tend to fall out of the components. The defacto standard is insulated composite cable it is a five wire set of cable yellow, red, white, magenta, burnt orange and blue with gold RCA connectors. It is expensive but is the best. Just look at the high end connectivity for the Xbox 360 the HD cable is just that.
