Whats the best Standard Definition DVD player out there for the money?
Question: I am considering the Denon 2910, the yamaha DVDS2500, and the marantz 7600... any other suggestions?
Answers: Those are decent models, but there are better performming DVD decks out there for a similar price.
For example, the Arcam DiVA DV78 DVD Player ($999). The video performance is superior, and the audio performance is considerably more musical than the Denon, Yamaha, or the Marantz. Actually, it's probably (at the very least) the best DVD player under $1,000 there is on the market right now.
If you want (and are willing to pay for) the ultimate, the Meridian 800 ($14,500+).
Toshiba SD-K 760. It plays every file, even divx. Region Free. Cost - $50.
Krell DVD Standard ($8000)
Krell Showcase DVD player ($3500)
Linn Unidisc 1.1 ($11000)
Linn Unidisc SC ($4000)
McIntosh Labs MVP861 ($4000)
I own the Unidisc SC, and it is SPECTACULAR!!! They are hand made in Scotland if I remember right, and they do take pride in their work!
On the other hand, Krell has an understated industrial elegance and their products are nearly without peer.
Then again, the McIntosh piece just LOOKS menacing, yet classy, and once you go Mc, you never go back!
Yes, I HAVE tested all of these devices, and I have SOLD these devices as a salesperson at a very high end retailer, so I am not just talking out the side of my mouth here, I actually know what I am talking about.
My recommendation? Go to your local high end retailer and bring your favorite CD's and DVD's and ask for a test drive. If they say no, don't bother to give them your business, go somewhere else.
Hope these help!
