What is the best hdtv set?
Answers: It all depends what you want and how much you are willing to spend.
Right now, the best TV out there would have to be the Sony SXRD (~$3k to ~$4k for their 50 and 60 ). It is based off of LCoS, which is a very solid TV tech right now. Though, getting the best does not come with a price tag.
If you need something that is thin, then obviously LCD or Plasma are your only options right now. For your money, LCD is going to give your more for less. Right now, Sony's Bravia line-up (~$3k for 42 ) is the best LCDs on the market with Sharp Aquos (!$2k for 42 ) coming up second. Sony's cost a lot more than Sharp's, but again, you pay for the best. If you have more money to spend, plasma would be a little better than LCD, though one thing to keep in mind is that any plasma 42 or under isn't true HD (1024x768). Panasonic's commercial line-up (~$2.5k for a 42 ) is an exceptional value right now, get a lot for your money. Otherwise, Fujistu and Pioneer ($4k to $5k for around a 42 ) are the cream of the crop when it comes to plasma.
Next, for the money, a rear projection LCD is a great value for what you get. The Sony A10 line-up is probably the best in the $1,500 range, can't be beat. If you are looking for a higher quality one, Hitachi's Cinema line-up would be the best rear projection LCDs out there.
For a little more, you can go with a DLP, which will give you better black levels and color than LCD. Mitsubishi and Toshiba are the DLPs to get, Samsung if you need to save money. You would be looking at around $1.5k to $2k for a 42 or so.
Lastly, there is CRT, which still produces the best picture out there right now bar none. Down size of CRT is the size and weight. Direct-view only goes upto around 36 for around $1.5K or so. Direct-view, Sony is the TV to get. There is also rear projection CRT, which Mitsu, Toshiba and Hitachi are the TVs to get. Sitting you around $1.5k to $2k for about a 42 .
the one that i have ! <3 *
The best I have seen is a Pioneer Elite Plasma, although the new HD Panasonic plasmas are really great too. I think Sony has lost their edge, but that's just my opinion.
SONY SXRD
It's a personal decision. Look at them all and do some reasearch on the web. I just bought a new Panasonic 42 inch plasma (42PX60) after doing lots of reasearch and I absolutely love the set. Panasonic has the biggest share of the plasma market and are generally very well regarded by the experts but other people might prefer a Sony, Pioneer or even a lower priced Vizio. You also have to decide whether you want Plasma, LCD, projection or even a standard CRT set (only available in sizes up to about 30 inches). Do your homework and you'll come up with right decision and you will be amazed at the quality of HDTV when you get it in your home!
The Sony SXRD. New one expected out in July of 2006.
