¿What´s the practical difference between active & non-active subwoofer?

Answers: An active subwoofer has an amplifier built in (which means you send it an unpowered cable like an RCA cable and must provide it with power) whereas a passive subwoofer has no amplifier and must be connected with speaker wire. If you buying a subwoofer for a dolby digital home theater is HAS to be an active subwoofer. Also, there are really no quality passive subwoofers made for home theater (they make good ones for pro audio).
It's actually active versus passive sub, and the difference is that an active sub is powered (by it's own amp), while a passive sub relies on external amplification.
Actually,

Atlantic Technology make a 16,000 set of speakers that contains 2 or more passive subs, powered by a high current outboard amp with more eq adjustments on it than a typical active sub. Sounds great
