Faulty professional stereo system amplifier. Fix it or trash it?
Question: I got this from my father in law a few years back, it's an awesome Sony Audio-Video surround sound system with a million buttons and connections. There's a problem with the on-off switch (turns on/off erratically), and the whole unit heats up like a toaster when it's on, so it's a fire hazard. I hate to throw it away. Should I fix it or sell it? Or trash it? Please help. It's a Sony STR-AV1070.
Answers: Often times the power shutoff is a safeguard from overheating. This normally occurs only when there isn't proper ventilation (e.g. when the amp is inside a glass cabinet or surround by other electronic equipment.) I don't know your situation, but by moving your amp into free air, this may solve both the on/off problem AND the heat problem. If you have it in a free-flowing area and it still has the problems, I'd trash it. It'd probably cost a couple hundred to fix, or you could replace it with a newer, cooler, better system for a few hundred more.
For about $50 you could probably take it to a Sony authorized service center, and get a diagnosis. If it's something minor, you will have saved alot of money by fixing it. But if it's shot, then at least you'll feel better knowning you didnt toss a good unit for nothing.
