When will it be a good time to buy a HD DVD player? Are there any decent cheap ones out there yet?

Answers: I would wait 1 year from its first big selling event...
Now you will just pay the premium price of been the first... And we don´t know yet how many speeds will it have, special features, etc...
just get a blueray player
check meritline.com
with both the blu ray and HD DVD players competing I would wait at least a year
do you wanna get stuck with the wrong format player after the dust settles? remember bettamax(?) vs vcrs?
probably in your imagination
Wait till the prices come down to suit your budget. Then get one which is mutliregional and has a digital tuner! Try Richersounds, they are very good!!!
do you need an hd dvd player as well as tv as well as subscribing to the hd channels what a joke save your money its all a con.
make sure you have a HDTV first. no point in getting something that you can't use.....

and yah, it's all a con. you want something that will change you home movie experiences? how about some real good surround sound. movies are still played in theatres on the same film, all they did to make the movie experience better in the last decade was to add better sound.
Wait at least 6 mo, preferably a year. Both formats are having problems, and BluRay is suffering picture quality issues. I have seen HD-DVD and the picture is outstanding, but there are operational issues with the player. Also, there is a chance that after a year there will be multi-format players so you won't be restricted to one or the other when buying or renting discs. Also, I think that the prices of BluRay are way too high at present.
the hd player costs to much,DONT BUY IT,wait, an you can get an ps3 with Blue Ray suport and it is cheaper,an its ... PLAYSTAION 3( HDD included)
Yeah they seem to have many bugs. The first generation mechines to me left a lot to be disired. I will probably wait untill 2 things happen.

1. toshiba(HDDVD) and sony(Blu-Ray) come to an agreement and put out one format. Then every electonics company will make a unit and competition will bring down Prices.

2. After they settle and the second generation machines ( 2nd generation for the new format) have been debugged I'll wait for the third generation to buy one.

By then it might be time for a new tv tchnology to come out. (SED)
Never, Blu Ray and HD DVD will be fighting it out for a few years.
Meanwhile, Windows Vista will enable you to purchase and download any content you want. Most people will store video at home on huge servers or just buy/rent it for a few days. You are buying a new buggy whip when Henry Ford is about to flood the country with cars. Don't waste your money. I work in the communications industry and we got a HD DVD player and HD movie. It didn't look any better than a normal DVD because it wasn't filmed in HD. It will be a long while before movie cameras are changed over.
Wait about 6 months for the prices to really
start coming down. Because of the strong
competition on the internet, prices have
already started falling. Just to a search on
one of those price comparison websites.

I would recommend going with the Blu-Ray
over the HD DVD format (only time will tell
for sure which one will survive) because the
Blu-Ray format offers full 1080p, whereas
HD DVD only does 1080i.

There is talk in the industry of a universal
player that will do both. Have patience if
you want to get it all and save money at
the same time.

I'M going to buy the HD-DVD player for my xbox 360 and hang with that until i get my ps3.I wold wait until the players comes with a recorder first before i buy, I enjoy movies but would also like the opportunity to record on my HD PLAYER, esp since I have a hdtv reciever the cheapeast ive seen is 799 for a player at tweeter

good luck
i would wait a year or 2. at the moment the latest connection formats for HDMI have yet to be applied and blu-ray are still using standard DVD encoding which in many cases makes them worse then standard DVD.
