Does optical audio make a difference compared to RCA?

Answers: Difference is that with the RCA, you'll have 2 conversions (out : digital to analog, and in : analog to digital), whereas you don't need any with the optical (out digital to in digital). But saying that digital sound is always clearer could make a very long discussion :-)
Digital will always sound clearer than analog, and that's the main advantage you get by using the fiber optic connection. The other advantage, when using a surround sound setup, is that all the channels can run through one single fiber optic cable to your receiver, rather than using several sets of RCA cables. Hope that helps.
The correct answer is try both and see if YOU notice a difference. If you really don't, then it just becomes a brag factor. But if you just have to have the latest-and-greatest, then go ahead.
Another thing is that optical can not be interfered with like the analog can if it is the RCA 2 line audio or the RCA digital coax. Also, much more information can pass through the digital (optical) line which means you will not loose any sound quality.
Optical is based on light and the speed of light is faster than electricity. Although, the ones and zeros are still travelling optimally for both digital cable and optical. Both will enable you to achieve DTS for example and they both will sound the same to the naked ear. But optical reduces wire clutter slightly since RCA is thicker. Lastly, optical is more expensive so it will depend on your cost priorities. The most important component to purchase to maximize sound is your speakers. If you are not high end (i.e. $1000.00+ center speaker), then a digital cable will sound fine for the money.
It depends upon a few things.
One, it depends upon the quality
of the cable used. Among cheap
cables, the optical cable will be
superior. Among high-quality
cables, the digital cable is more
convenient due to simplicity, but
a high-grade RCA analog cable
can be just as good or even
better -especially as compared
to a optical cable. And if you have
balanced cable connections, this
would be my first choice with a
high-grade balanced cable.

If you want convenience and great
sound combined, go with a high-
grade S/PDIF digital coaxial cable
with RCAs.

Yes it does, the optical audio is digital to digital for one, it carries all five channels of sound.
RCA is analog , so therefore it goes from digital to analog, also it only carries two channels of sound (Left and right)
