Which technology would you go for: HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

Answers: Neither.

The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle has not even warmed up yet. I certainly don't want to end up like those poor people who invested in Betamax back in the 1970s!

It's not necessarily the distinct advantages of either technology that interest me, nor will they predict which technology will eventually be adopted. In fact, Betamax was the superior technology. It lost simply because of market forces and speed to market of VHS.

And... I truly believe that it's too early for this technology. Adoption of HDTV is not nearly as high as it needs to be to make the new format(s) viable.

And, in any event, it makes little sense to invest in either technology right away. In 1-2 years the equipment being sold now and later this year will be inferior and will have cost a lot more. Current buyers are paying for development costs and a lot of DRM nonsense. The MPAA haven't even endorsed either technology so where are the movies going to come from?

Having said that, I do believe that Sony may lose the battle again. HD-DVD is already available and more cost-effective, even though Blu-Ray will be available in the PS3, is technically superior and has more storage capacity.
HD-DVD, cheaper.
I think HD-DVD, easily available and economical!
i would prefer blu-ray due to their higher capacity ~25GB/layer. i heard they also plan to add more layers to disc, resulting in more capacity. HD-DVD holds ~15GB/layer

So if one layer holds ~25GB then 4layer=100GB in single disc
HD-DVD.

The main thing for me with HD-DVD is that it is cheaper to manufacture, which means cheaper for my wallet. Also, the whole size thing is more than moot right now as blu-ray's first movies will be only 25 GB and rumors saying that they are having major problems with 50 GB pressed Blu-rays, that they haven't been able to do one out of the lab yet on a massive scale. So the whole size thing is moot. Now with HD-DVD being out, we will start to see more studios jump the fence and make movies for both formats, making the content issue moot also.

On top of it all, HD-DVD has the name. I know it sounds minor, but for non-technical people, it is major. When they are used to seeing DVD, the logical connection with that is HD-DVD, not Blu-ray.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, I have a bad feeling it is going to go like the DVD-A vs SACD war, stale big time, but until then, HD-DVD h as my full support.

It is really too bad Sony is only allowing the $600 version of the PS3 to play Blu-ray movies. I think they shot themself in the foot with that one.
hmm..
Sony Lost beta war back in he days.
Currently Sony owns roughly about 50% of the entertainment industry.
Blu-ray is backed by some of the most influencial companies in the world.

Oh by the way the reason HD-DVD is cheaper is not because its easier to manufacturfe, but because its not 1080P yet.
When the 1080P HD-DVD comes out they will be just as expensive as the Blu-ray.

The better HD_DVD player cost 800$ and it doesnt do what the Blu-Ray will.

And plus about 75% or more residences currently own a Sony Playstaion 2. And by using Blu-Ray in ps3 it will get a boost.
the blu-ray, which will broadcast at a higher resolution (1080i), carries 25 GB of memory (compared to about 15 GB on an HD-DVD). however, i will have to remember that blu-ray players are way more expensive than hd-dvd players but as the above quote states - hd-dvd players will just be as expensive when those hd-dvds reach 1080i resolution. however, i would personally go for a blu-ray since most of us are getting ps3s anyway and they include a blu-ray player all for only ($499) while a blu ray player alone costs a staggering $1000! Furthermore, the cost of blu-ray will eventually go down to its influx of companies supporting it. rivalry will ensue, causing mass consumer competition (think of the ps3 sales) and therefore, to meet consumer demands, eventually blu-ray players and discs will be cheaper to manufacture. blu-ray all the way!
