Do theaters with 4:3 screens put black bands on their screens?
Question: when a theater with a 4:3 screen shows a 2.35:1 scope movie do they put black bands at the top and bottom of the screen?
Answers: There aren't very many such theaters around, I'm guessing. A few restored classic theaters may have such a screen still in order to preserve the original architecture.
In the case of the one local theater I've seen like this, they simply projected the widescreen image on the 4:3 screen, so the top and bottom were not illuminated. But they didn't put up any specific border bars or anything.
However - when a panavision screen shows a narrower 16:9 movie, they often have motorized shutters that come in from the side to narrow the screen. But I have not seen the same thing done for the small number of 4:3 screens that still exist.
No, the just play the movie.
Yes, the Standard Format for Television Manufacturers is 4:3 meaning for every 4 Horizontal/ across there's 3 Vertical/ down but 2.35:1 and 16:9 Theater rations will still have a Widescreen black bar on both the top and bottom. Since 2.35:1 and 16:9 are Theater Formats giving more information and wider visual details, when compressed to a 4:3 screen format the Picture looks blurry and/ or stretched.
