Why do some phone calls that I receive, make only repeating long beeps?

Question: Used to happen on my land line all the time, day or night.

But now it has happened on my cell phone.

Any ideas? Cause it is driving me crazy; not to mention using up my cell phone minutes?
Answers: dont answer any numbers you do not know. when you recieve a call form someone you dont know, dont answer it, go to a land phone, and after they leave a message, you can call them back. This saves on your minutes, also
when you get to a fax machine, try faxing back the number thats stored in your phone after this happens, (with the big long beeps,) and tell them youre not a fax machine, youre a cell phone.
that sounds like a fax tone coming through. Do you have someone trying to send you faxes?? maybe they have your cell number too???
More than likely, someone misdialed and you're receiving a fax tone.
NO
