Does a program have to be broadcast in high definition for you to recieve the high def benifit of your tv?
Answers: yes, your TV has to be HD ready. If you use a cable or satilite box, it also has to be HD ready. And the channel must be a HD channel and finally the particular show has to be brodcast in HD.
Just because you are watching a channel that calls itself HD, dosen't mean that at every moment in time they are broadcasting HD content.
So you have to have the TV, Cable\SAT box, Channel, and Show all in tune with HD before you can get he highest quility picture!
Believe me when you see a HD broadcast you can easily see the difference, and it's awsome!

The one exception, if I may is that a lot of local stations such as ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and PBS are broadcast locally and in HD. This means that you can take your HDTV and hook and antenna to it (one made for receiving HD broadcast) and instead of viewing your tv through a cable box you can view it through the antenna and you will get those channels (if they're within receivable distance) and it's 100% free! Of course this means you won't be able to see any other standard cable channels, but it's a way to get some free HD and it works if the cable goes out. Some tv's even allow you to have 2 sources to recieve channels so you can ping pong between the cable service and the antenna.
But channels like HBO, Showtime, Discovery, TNT all need to be available in HD in your area and broadcasting in HD for your HDTV to get that HD picture.
